Yeah! The big drive to Munich today. About 360 kilometers or 3 hour drive. When you can travel over 100 mph on the autobahn, it doesn’t take long, even with road constrution. Thanks to Rick who did all the driving and knows his way around Germany.
Got to our hotel called the Comfort Hotel Munchen City-Center on 33 Landwehrstrasse., and David went to the train station to meet his buddy Robbie who is studying in Rome for a semester. From our hotel, the festival grounds were a 6-7 minute walk. The train station, 5-6 minutes. Town center and the Hofbrauhaus, a 15 minute walk. How cool is that.
Our first Oktoberfest for three out of four of us. What an experience! Over 6 million were expected during this festival, and we attended the last weekend. I have never seen so many people in one place.
Rick had managed to get tickets to one of the smaller tents (350 people) next to the Hacker-Pschorr tent. Appropriately named the Chicken tent. Each of the major breweries in Munich has a tent and there are 14 large tents. Rick went through a travel agency in California and the two young ladies, with the green ‘Got Beer’ tee-shirts, in the picture are Ashley and Anne with Ludus Tours. We were gladly welcomed at their table. Each table seats 10-12 people.
For comparison, if you don’t have tickets to get into the beer tents, you probably won’t get in. If you get your tickets 10-12 months in advance, you might pay 40-50 euros each. If you were to find some now, expect to pay over 300 euros and as high as 500 euros for ONE ticket. (1 euro = $1.50)
The atmosphere in the tents is undescribe-able, so I won’t even try. You must experience it for yourself. The singing and cheers and dancing is something to behold. Quickly we were swept up in the festive mood and joined the chorus.
If you pictured Oktoberfest with young buxom maidens carrying 6 large steins of beer, you would be soooo wrong. (They carry ten) Each stein holds a liter or 33 ounces of beer. Included in our fantastic roasted chicken dinner were two of these steins, each. Ooftha! They might just make a nice souvenir.
Rick and I are talking about organizing a group in 2009 or 2010 to return to Munich for this festival. If anyone reading this has some interest, please let us know. The details will unfold as we enjoy yet another liter of brew.
I'm attempting to capture the horrible time we're having in Munich and at Oktoberfest. I'll let you guess for yourself. Cheers!

Task: Pickup David at the airport in Hahn, which just happens to be the German word for rooster. (Huhn for chicken) We also picked up a young couple who needed a ride to Mannheim after which we headed to Heidelberg. We had to have a beer at the Hemingway Bar. A couple pics of from Heidelberg and then we headed back to Mosbach/Obreheim, where Rick lives.
We had to give David a taste of a German brewery, so back to the Mosbach Brauhaus. The two tall glass cylinders of beer are called giraffes and each holds 3 liters. It was an early night.

Wednesday Evening, October 1, 2008
Tonight we joined some of Ricks friends, Ziggy (1) and family for another schnitzel dinner in Mosbach. Most of these people I had met the night before. Georgie is the young girl in the photo who enjoyed Chicken Little and asked about the story behind the chicken. Great food, great beer, and great friends.
Before heading home, Rick and stopped to say goodbye to Ziggy(2) & Marianne where they surprised me be giving me a really gorgeous German beer stein. They showed me several of them and asked me to choose. It was difficult, because they all had their uniqueness. After reaching a decision, they said “take all three of them” I was floored. Wow! That is just one example of German hospitality. I feel like I’ve known Ziggy & Marrianne for years. I will miss them greatly.

To market, to market….in Mosberg. Saw the smallest house in Germany, took a photo next to the Kiwell Schisser, now that was a bad job. We stopped and had some Thai food for lunch. Excellent!

After the fantastic Besen, which lasted almost 4 hours, it was time to go…..out some more. We drove over to Mosbach to a pub called Aktiv and the fun began. Before long almost 20 people/friends arrived. Chicken Little was quite the talk of the table!
Carol, Amy, Dianne, Marrianne, Martina, Me, Nancy, Ziggy (1), El Paso lady. I’m in the photo with the owner/bartender who took me on a tour the cellar which had a plaque showing the date the pub was built, 1653. Great fun was had by all.

Began the day with a Doner from Stern in Obrigheim. A Doner is a Turkish sandwich in a pita bread. Quite tasty.
After the afternoon nap and some internet market research, we headed over to Ziggy & Marianne’s place, around the corner from Rick, so that we could ride with them to Gunderlsheim, a nearby village, where we attended a Besen. A Besen is a place where you eat that is also a butcher. The food was fantastic, the wine was flowing quite heavily, and the company was outstanding.
The photo has Ziggy, Rick, Marrianne, and myself. Ziggy had ordered the blood sausage, so I had to take that photo also. Rick and I shared an order of schnitzel. Delicious. The young couple is Z&M's son, Stefan and his girlfriend.

Still more Monday night!!
I would have been more than content and full to stop right there, but nooooooo, it was only 10pm, and the next birthday party was at Rick’s landlords, Sebastian and Monika. (they live right above Rick)
The one photo has (left to right ) Sebastian, myself sitting next to Wolfgang, Elly, Waldrod, Olla, Queen Elizabeth, Roland, and Monika.
Fun was had by all especially me. It got real interesting when Rick, my translater, left for 5-10 minutes. Try telling your worst joke to a group of Germans. It’s hilarious.
However, Chicken Little got a little carried away and I had to bring her home a little earlier than expected. Bad chicken.

Monday Night, September 30, 2008
The night began about 7pm when we drove over to Pete & Nancy’s house in Mosbach for Peter’s 43rd birthday party. Their daughter is Karina (12) and Peter’s parents Joachin & Heidi. The food was incredible, even though it came from a can. Bratwurst, Leberwurste, Schwartemagen. Cheese, fresh brot (bread), ham, pickled pumpkin, etc..: A very nice assortment! It was absolutely delicious. Sitting around a table with a chicken and a local family and attempting to speak German: priceless!

More pics of Bad Wimpfen.

More Monday, September 29, 2008
After the castle we drove a few kilometers to a village called Bad Wimpfen where we had lunch at a place called Restaurant Picasso. This was a classic small German village. I will let the pics do the talking.

Still Monday, more castle pictures.
